Something seems amiss in the life of Cincinnatus: he is the sole prisoner in a jail where everyone treats him with kindness and politeness. Yet, they refuse to reveal the date of his execution. Cincinnatus dreams, doubts, and loses himself in nostalgia. The more urgently he seeks stability, the clearer it becomes: nothing is as it seems.
In the reactor hall, the opera based on the novel by Russian exile Vladimir Nabokov has its world premiere—a Kafkaesque portrait of authoritarian regimes, still strikingly relevant 90 years after its publication.
